2010 VANCOUVER OLYMPICS ANTHEM “I BELIEVE”

IN COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT LAWSUIT

Chatham based musician Pete Mason from Myztery claims he wrote
original song

Toronto, ON October 4, 2011: Pete Mason, of the band Myztery,
claims that he has had his song substantially copied by musicians by Alan Frew of Glass Tiger and composer Stephan Moccio, the co-composer of “I’m Here (A Song for Canada)” for Canada’s Walk of Fame (held on October 1 in Toronto).

He has begun a legal battle of Olympic proportions. He believes substantial
sections of the music and lyrics of “I Believe”, the quadruple platinum single,
recorded by Nikki Yanofsky, and used by CTV to promote the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games were reproduced or derived by Canadian musicians/ composers Stephan Moccio and Alan Frew from Mason's song "Power Of Love." Other defendants include Universal Music and CTV.

Pete Mason was a Catholic Priest working in Vancouver, BC until 2004, and then began the band Myztery after laicization. He composed “I Believe” in 2008, later re-naming it “Power of Love”. One year later, he gave a pre-master CD of songs, including “Power of Love,” to someone helping in Diamond’s Mystical Rose studio while he was recording “Cyber Superstar”, a new Myztery album.

While in the studio, this person twice suggested to Mason that he submit
“Power of Love” for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games theme song
because it would make an excellent anthem for the theme of the Olympics –
Believe.  Mason responded that he was not interested in his suggestion.
Masons that Moccio and/or Frew received a recording of “Power of
Love” either directly from that studio worker or indirectly from him through
another individual.

In February 2010, CTV reporter Lisa LaFlamme asked Moccio about how he
wrote the Olympic song “I Believe.” Moccio replied, “We got the master tapes.” During an interview with Barry Shainbaum of Faith FM in Kitchener, ON, Frew explained that he wrote the lyrics and the melody to “I Believe” and worked it into Moccio’s instrumental version of the song. www.myztery.net/press/frew-shainbaum.html.

Mason says “The world deserves to know what we believe to be the true origin of the song ‘I Believe’ and all that went into my lyrics ‘‘I believe in the power of love’ from our 2008 ‘Spirit of Canada tour.’” The case will be held at the Federal Court in Toronto.  Myztery released, initially as a single, a "Cyndie" version of Power of Love (aka I Believe) under the original title of the song:  "I Believe."
